Your Opinion Counts

Mud River Angoras is looking to expand and would like your opinion as to what you want to see offered! Up for consideration is selling Ashford products, weaving and spinning DVD’s and videos, hand painted rovings, more exotics fibres and silks, and angora merino colour blends. Tell us what you want and we will expand to meet your fibre dreams.

Fibre tips and thoughts:
Finishing a woven Angora scarf…Angora blooms as it is worked with. Once your item is finished being woven and has been hand washed and dried flat, put it in the dryer on air (no heat) with an towel and tumble it for 5 minutes. Take it out and if it has not bloomed enough try another 5 minutes. If you’d like to try weaving an angora silk scarf, we are now offering a scarf kit, see it here.

Some people think angora is hard to spin. The fact is that these people have often bought a cheap angora roving that’s staple is the length of cotton (1"-2"). (Ask me how I know this? I was once this disappointed and frustrated spinner.) Prime Angora for spinning should be at least 3" long. Angora does need to be spun with more twist than wool and a slightly tighter pinch but it isn’t hard, it’s dreamy.

When finishing a handspun silk skein remember to slap it on the counter to restore luster when it is still damp, don’t wait until it’s dry.

One can never have enough fibre, after all it’s much cheaper than therapy and a whole lot more fun!

The Crazy Thing I Did….

I saw this spinning wheel in an antique shop and just couldn’t say no. After all when are you ever going to find another one? It’s the largest wheel I’ve ever seen (I haven’t measured it yet but it’s got to be about 8 feet tall) and I’m going to research if it could be the largest one in BC, Canada, North America or ??? Call me if you’d like to make an appointment to visit us and see this enormous wheel. You really have to see it to appreciate how big it is. In the picture below you can see my most excellent weaving teacher, Laura Fry and my Ashford traditional in front of it. Laura is 5'9".
